CanMEDS-FM

Learn more about the newly revised CanMEDS-FM 2017 competency framework during Family Medicine Innovations in Research and Education Day on Wednesday, November 8th, at Family Medicine Forum (FMF).

CanMEDS-FM 2017 is relevant to all family physicians regardless of practice type, location, or populations served. Along with the Family Medicine Professional Profile it forms an overall picture of the roles, responsibilities, and competencies of Canadian family physicians.

The new framework updates CanMEDS-FM 2009 and incorporates changes made to the CanMEDS 2015 framework of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. New elements in CanMEDS-FM 2017 include an emphasis on generalism and, as part of this, a requirement for family physicians to adapt their lifelong learning priorities to meet the needs of the communities they serve. Cultural safety, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement are also emphasized.
