At his Keynote Address on Friday, November 10th, Dr. Alain Naud provided an intimate look at what medical assistance in dying (MAID) means to both the patient and provider. Dr. Naud, a family physician in Quebec, has worked in palliative care for 31 years and has been a MAID provider since assisted dying was legalized in his province. While emphasizing that a patient’s desire for MAID is not an indictment of palliative services, Dr. Naud explained the value of this treatment option and why he sees it as the ultimate in patient-centred care.
